March 5 - Adelaide

Today we moved back onto the mainland from Hobart Tasmania to Adelaide South Australia. For a while this morning it looked like we wouldn’t make it to Adelaide.  Our flights were from Hobart to Melbourne and then from Melbourne to Adelaide.  But there was a big storm in Melbourne and our flight was delayed by an hour.  This meant we were going to miss our connecting flight to Adelaide, so the airline released the seats to standby passengers.  The next flight to Adelaide with enough seats for the entire tour group was not until 8pm.  Luckily for us, they were finally able to seat the entire group on the original flight and they were able to hold it in its gate until our flight arrived from Hobart.  The end result was that we arrived at Adelaide close to the originally scheduled time.

Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth-most populous city of Australia. Adelaide was established as a planned colony of free immigrants, promising civil liberties and freedom from religious persecution.  It proudly proclaims that it was not established as a penal colony.

Adelaide is a planned city. The municipal plan, sometimes referred to as "Light's Vision" arranged Adelaide in a grid, with five squares in the Adelaide city centre and a ring of parks, known as the Adelaide Parklands, surrounding it.  This makes for a very scenic city.

For dinner we met Ted and Sheryl Beagley.  We met them on our first river cruise in 2014, and we have kept up communications with them over the years. It was lovely to see them again after all these years.  It was a fun evening as we talked about our vacations, our families and our common interests.  For dinner they took us to the Chianti restaurant. The food was delicious and the Australian wine, that was selected by Ted, was also great.

Down the street from our hotel is the Adelaide Fringe Festival.  All the sidewalks are full of dinners and party goers.  I just wish we had more time to enjoy the festival, but unfortunately the next few days have ungodly waking up hours.
